In 2014, former band members Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott relit the melodic indie flames of erudite UK pop troupe The Beautiful South to release a collaborative studio album that took them all the way to number three on the UK Albums Chart. Embellished with a cover painting by David Storey, What Have We Become? spawned a popular first single in "D.I.Y," which reached number 75 on the UK Singles Chart, and paved the way for the 2015 follow-up, Wisdom, Laughter and Lines, which went to number four on the UK Albums Chart. The pair have since poured their kinetic energy into three more album releases: 2017's Crooked Calypso, 2020's Manchester Calling, and N.K-Pop in 2022.
