A pioneer of contemporary African music since Nandipo in 1974, Gabon's Pierre Akendengué is also a poet, playwright and cultural advisor to his country's government. Despite landmark albums such as Mando (1983), Lambarena (1993) with Hugues de Courson, and Maladalité (1995), Pierre Akendengué never crossed the boundary between critical acclaim and mainstream recognition. Despite this unintentional gap, in 2013 Pierre Akendengué released Destinée, his twentieth album produced by François Bréant.
