Born on April 15, 1956, in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, Rajendra Prasanna is an Indian classical musician and composer who plays the flute (bansuri) and the śahnāī (Indian oboe). He learned śahnāī techniques from his grandfather Gauri Shankar while also learning the bānsurī flute from his father Raghunath Prasanna and his uncles Bholanath and Vishnu Prasanna. He first came to prominence when he co-founded musical duo the Prasanna Brothers with his brother Rishab Prasanna. They performed as an Indian classical flute duo in their own right as well as accompanying their father in concert. Rajendra Prasanna was invited to perform at the 1968 Calcutta Music Conference at the age of 12, which was the beginning of his solo musical journey. Over the course of his career, Rajendra Prasanna not only contributed to the international diffusion of Indian music, winning a Grammy Award in 2004 for his participation in the Concert for George in honor of the late George Harrison in 2004. His back catalog – including albums such as Colors of Life, Flute Fantasy and Ghoomar – all of which have become Indian classical music standards. He remains a popular musical figure in India, scoring chart hits such as “Wo Ladki Yaad Aati Hai” in 2022. A popular live act, Rajendra Prasanna has performed all over the world including Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and Australia.
