Soul, jazz and pop vocalist Rebekah was born Rebecca Johnson in Cleveland, Ohio on September 3, 1976. She is best-known for co-writing Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster” and her own hit single “Sin So Well”. She has also written and recorded under the name Rebekah Jordon. Johnson released her debut album, Remember to Breathe, in 1998. The album featured the singles “Hey Genius” and “Sin So Well”, which reached Number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Even after that success, she left the label due to creative differences and signed with Clive Davis’ J Records. After three years, no recordings were released and she asked to be released from her contract. In 2003, a song she co-wrote with Matthew Wilder, “Beautiful Disaster”, was recorded by Kelly Clarkson and featured on Clarkson’s debut album Thankful. As Rebekah Jordan, she released the 2005 EP The Trouble with Fiction. The release featured musical assistance from Butch Norton on drums and John BaIlinger on guitar. The following year, Johnson, Norton, and Ballinger formed a band called Dreaming Ferns and released a limited EP entitled You’re A Spark. Moving to Brooklyn, New York in 2009, Johnson began writing with artists like John Legend and Alice Smith. Johnson released her Souvenir EP, which was nominated for an Independent Music Award in 2011. Johnson then began collaborating in the studio with a variety of artists, adding her vocals to releases by Rockie Fresh, The KickDrums, and Venice Dawn. In 2013, six songs that she had co-written were released on Alice Smith’s She album. One of those tracks, “Another Love”, was reinterpreted and recorded by Prince and 3rdeyegirl on their album Plectrumelectrum (2014).
