Rema – born Divine Ikubor on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigera – is an afrobeat and trap singer, songwriter and rapper. While attending primary and secondary school in Edo State, he began singing and rapping. He released his first two singles – “Starboy” and “Mercy” – in 2017. After he posted a viral freestyle to D’Prince’s “Gucci Gang” in 2018, he attracted the attention of D’Prince himself who flew him to Lagos to sign a record deal. After Rema signed with Jonzing World in 2019, he released his self-titled debut EP. His single “Iron Main” earned worldwide attention when former U.S. President Barack Obama added it to his ‘summer playlist’ in 2019. In October of that year, he was nominated at the 13th edition of The Headies for Viewer’s Choice. He continued to release a string of singles in 2019 including “Corny”, “Trap Out the Submarine”, “Lady”, “Spaceship Jocelyn” and “Rewind”. In January 2020, he received the Soundcity MVP for Best New Artist. He continued to receive awards while releasing more new tracks including “Bearner (Bad Boy)”, “Rainbow”, “Ginger Me”, and “Woman”. In September, some of Rema’s music was included as part of the official FIFA 21 soundtrack. Rema released his long-awaited debut album, Rave & Roses in 2022, which was critically acclaimed and landed in the Top 10 in Canada and the Netherlands, hit number 31 in France, and climbed to number 81 on the Billboard 200. The album included the international smash hit “Calm Down” (featuring Selena Gomez), which hit number 1 in several countries and hit number 3 in the US. Rema returned in 2024 with the single “Benin Boys” (with Shallipopi), the first single lifted from his sophomore album Heis.
