Pop, soul, and hip hop musician / singer / songwriter Alexander James O'Connor - born on May 4, 1998, in Grayshott, Hampshire, England – is better known by his stage name Rex Orange County. At the age of 5, his mother enrolled him in the school choir where she worked, and he immersed himself in music. Influenced by alternative, rock, and soul artists such as Weezer, Green Day, Queen, and Stevie Wonder, he learned to play many instruments including piano, drums and guitar. By the time he was 16, he was writing and recording his own songs at home using a sequencer and whatever instrument he had handy. He attended the BRIT School of Performing Arts, where he spent time perfecting his drumming skills. At the age of 18, he had self-produced his first album, Bcos U Will Never B Free (2015), which reached number 28 in Australia. Rex Orange County caught the ear of rapper Tyler, The Creator, who flew him to Los Angeles, California to sing on his album Flower Boy. Rex Orange County’s sophomore album, Apricot Princess (2017), was a success in the US, reaching number 2 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. By the time of his third album, Pony (2019), he was already an international success, and the album hit the Top 5 in the UK, Australia, Canada, and United States. Rex Orange County released his fourth album, Who Cares?, in 2022, and achieved his first number 1 album in the UK and New Zealand. Featuring the hit singles “Open a Window” (with Tyler, the Creator), “Amazing,” and “Keep It Up,” Who Cares? Also reached number 5 in the US and number 2 in Australia. In 2024, Rex Orange County released the singles “Alexander” and “Guitar Song,” both of which were featured on his fifth album, The Alexander Technique.
