Rio Romeo is a nonbinary alternative-pop musician, content creator, and LGTBQ+ advocate. Born as "Romeo Gomez" in Los Angeles, California, on January 5, 1999, Romeo grew up participating in theatrical productions. They began writing songs and playing piano as a high school student, taking influence from classic stage musicals along the way. "Small Towns," their debut single, was released in 2018, followed by the full-length album Obnoxious Liberal: The Liberal. These early releases were characterized by lo-fi production, cabaret influences, and a reliance on keyboards. Romeo's music evolved over the years without losing its Broadway roots, and the songwriter unveiled an expanded sound with the viral single "Butch 4 Butch" in 2021. Singles like "Bet," "Fuck the Supreme Court," and "Fuck It" followed over the next two years. Several of those singles also appeared on the EP Good God, which was released in 2022. Another EP, Valentine, followed in 2023. The same year, the Good God track "Nothing's New" became another viral hit, earning more than 35 million streams on Spotify, reaching Number 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, and debuting at number 35 on Billboard's Top 50 Rock & Alternative Songs chart.
