The American hard rock band Rival Sons was formed by drummer Mike Miley, vocalist Jay Buchanan, and guitarist Scott Holiday in Long Beach, California. Launched in 2009, the band released an independently-funded debut album titled Before the Fire later that year 200o and earned invitations to tour with bands such as AC/DC, Alice Cooper and Kid Rock. Significantly, Rival Sons were also invited to perform at the Indy 500 motor sport event, resulting in national TV exposure throughout the US. After releasing a follow-up EP, the band partnered with the English musician and producer Digby Pearson, who signed the band to his Earache Records label. Pressure & Tire, Rival Sons' first release for Earache, was a Top 40 hit in Norway and Switzerland in 2011, with 2012's Head Down marking the band's first Top 40 success in the UK. By 2014, Rival Sons had earned a global audience, which pushed the album Great Western Valkyrie into the Top 20 in the UK, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. "Open My Eyes," the album's most successful single, was a chart-topping hit on the Canadian Rock Music Chart. 2016's Hollow Bones continued the band's momentum, and Rival Sons earned another Number 1 single with 2018's "Do Your Worst," which topped the Mainstream Rock Chart in America as well as the Canadian Rock Music Chart. The song appeared on the 2019 album Feral Roots, which was followed by two records, Darkfighter and Lightbringer, in 2023. Darkfighter and Lightbringer were both Top 40 successes in Switzerland and Germany, with Darkfighter reaching number 30 in the UK and Lightbringer climbing to number 48 on the same chart.
