Indian-born saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa entered the New York jazz scene in the mid-1990s after graduating from Berklee College of Music. After a timid start, the musician gained critical and institutional recognition for his duo albums with Vijay Iyer(Raw Materials, 2006), Kadri Golpanath(Kinsmen, 2008) and Bunky Green(Apex, 2010). After the late release of the MSG album(Tasty! was recorded in 2006) comes the acclaimed Samdhi, his first collaboration with the ACT label. Among many awards, Rudresh Mahanthappa is recognized for his work in syncretizing Indian Carnatic music with contemporary jazz.
