Sayuri Ishikawa is one of Japan's most popular and prolific enka singers, celebrated for her soulful voice and heartfelt performances. Born on 1 January 1958, in Kumamoto, Japan she made her debut in 1973 with the “Kakurenbo” (かくれんぼ Hide and Seek) single for Nippon Columbia and quickly captured the hearts of national audiences with her traditional singing style and soul-stirring lyrics. Over the decades, she has earned her icon status through the release of numerous hit songs, including 1986 single "Amagi-goe" (天城越え Walk Over Amagi Pass), in which she often explores themes of love, longing, and the beauty of everyday life. She has picked up numerous awards and accolades along the way, including the prestigious Spring Purple Ribbon Medal of Honours (令和元年春の紫綬褒章) in 2019 while also appearing in the 2023 Wim Wenders film Perfect Days, which won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Her distinctive voice has travelled through the eras, resulting in a constant stream of singles and studio albums over the decades, including most recently X - Cross IV in 2022 and the Tokoshie No Tabi EP in 2024.
