Shelby Flint

Singer, songwriter, and musician Shelby Flint – born in North Hollywood, California on September 17, 1939 – is best known for a pair of hit singles in the 1960s – “Angel on My Shoulder” (1961) and “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” (1966) – as well as providing vocals for several hits from television and motion picture soundtracks. Signed by songwriter and publisher Barry De Vorzen to the Cadence Records label, she released her first single, “I Will Love You,” in 1958. The single was not a hit, and she did not release another single until she signed do De Vorzon’s Valiant Records label and issued her folk music-inspired composition “Angel on My Shoulder” in 1960. The song reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was featured on her 1961 self-titled album. She released more singles – including a re-recording of “I Will Love You” – over the next few years but didn’t achieve any chart success until her cover version of Vince Guaraldi’s “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” which reached number 11 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Singles chart. While her solo recording career slowed to a crawl as the 1960s became the 1970s, she found success as a session vocalist and sang lead on songs included on soundtracks to films such as Snoopy Come Home (1972), Breezy (1973), and most notably, Disney’s The Rescuers, where her song “Someone’s Waiting for You” was nominated for Best Original Song in 1977. She also provided vocals for the song “Tomorrow Is Another Day” from the same animated film.
