Formed in 1973, Showaddywaddy was the result of the merger of two Leicester bands, Choise and Golden Hammers, making them an eight-piece band with an unusual line-up including two singers, two drummers and two bassists. They first came to prominence when they took part in the British TV show New Faces, finishing second in the final, which led to the release of their debut single "Hey Rock & Roll", which reached number two in the UK charts in 1974. It was the first of 22 hits - mainly rock'n'roll revivals - including covers of Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps To Heaven", Buddy Holly's "Heartbeat" and Curtis Lee's "Under the Moon of Love" , their only chart success, which sold a million copies. Subsequent covers include "I Wonder Why" (Dion & the Belmonts), "Blue Moon" (The Marcels) and "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" (Curtis Lee). Although hits dried up in the 1980s, the band remained a popular live attraction, playing rock'n'roll shows with changing line-ups (Buddy Gask died in 2011) and releasing occasional albums, such as 2008's The Sun Album.
