A Christian rock band from Tennessee, Skillet was formed in 1996 in Memphis by John Cooper, former lead singer of Seraph, and Ken Steorts, ex-member of Urgent Cry. The pair recruited Trey Clurkin as drummer. A debut album of the same name emerged in the first year, marked by a fashionable post-grunge color. The following year, the band were already hard at work recording their second opus, Hey You, I Love Your Soul (1998), which marked a major change in style as the band moved towards a less rough alternative rock sound. The third was marked by the integration of new musicians, Kevin Haaland as guitarist and Korey Cooper as keyboardist. The latter's arrival has an impact on the more electronic tone of Invincible (2000), which brings Skillet closer to industrial metal, and Alien Youth (no. 141). The latter marked a lull, but also brought the band wider public success, as did Collide (#179 in 2003), though not as much as its successor, Comatose , released in 2006 and peaking at #55 on the Billboard charts. The stylistic trend of smoother, quieter rock continues on subsequent albums, Awake (No. 2 in 2009), Rise (No. 4 in 2013), Unleashed (No. 3 in 2016) and Victorious (No. 17 in 2019). At the start of 2022, Skillet releases its eleventh album, Dominion, which reaches no. 38 in the US charts. This was followed by an expanded version with seventeen tracks on Dominion: Day of Destiny (2023), featuring a collaboration with Adam Gontier. Revolution followed in 2024, supported by the chart-topping tracks "All That Matters" and "Ash in the Wind".
