Born on 21 September 1992 in Setúbal to an Angolan father and Portuguese mother, João Batista Coelho is known professionally as Slow J; a Portuguese rapper, producer, and singer-songwriter who has been active on the hip-hop tuga scene since 2013. He released his debut album The Free Food Tape in 2015 and the follow-up, The Art of Slowing Down, in 2017, which drew from a range of influences including Portuguese fado and Angolan semba. He started to garner mainstream attention with the release of his third album You Are Forgiven in 2019, which reached number 42 in Portugal. He continued his trajectory with the release of singles such as "Where U @" and "Sem Ti" in 2023 before striking gold with his fourth album Afro-Fado, a trailblazing fusion of hip-hop and fado that landed him the number-one spot in Portugal. The album's opening track "Tata" also shot to the top of the Portuguese singles chart.
