A cult group from Detroit's underground hip-hop scene, formed in 1996, Slum Village have distinguished themselves by their erudite approach to music, incorporating samples of jazz, funk and soul into their tracks, in the same way as A Tribe Called Quest, their benchmark. Their career spanned eight albums, some of which were reissued in the early 2000s. Decimated in the late 2000s with the death of founding members J Dilla and Baatin, Slum Village survives through the memory work of Illa J, Young RJ and T3, the only survivors of the original trio, who in 2015 released an album created from unreleased J Dilla beats, christened Yes!
