Soil & "Pimp" Sessions

Formed in Tokyo in 2001, Soil & "Pimp" Sessions is a Japanese alternative jazz combo. Initially featuring frontman Shacho, trumpeter Tabu Zombie, pianist Josei, bassist Akita Goldman, drummer Midorin, and saxophonist Motoharu, the group cut its teeth in the jazz clubs of Tokyo and began playing national festivals in 2003, with the debut EP Pimpin' arriving in 2004. Pimp Master, the group's first full-length release, followed in 2005 and earned the band an international audience, paving the way for a prolific career that would find Soil & "Pimp" Sessions releasing a new album nearly every year. Highlights including 2007's Pimpoint, which marked the group's first Top 40 release in Japan, and 2013's Circles, which peaked at Number 15 and featured collaborations with a diverse spread of Japanese artists. Although Motoharu left the group after 2016's Black Track, Soil & "Pimp" Sessions forged ahead as a quintet, with Takeshi Kurihara serving as the band's saxophonist and honorary sixth member.
