Son de Cali, formed in 2002 in Cali, Colombia, was the brainchild of former Grupo Niche vocalists Willy García and Javier Vásquez, who sought to create their own distinct salsa sound. Their debut album, Estilo Propio (2002), showcased their unique fusion of trumpets, congas, and timbales, producing hits like "Tan Buena," "Y Entonces," and "¿Cómo Estás?" that dominated Latin American radio. Their rise was rapid, earning them the Orquesta Revelación del Año award at Premio Lo Nuestro in 2004. Their second album, Creciendo (2004), featured standout tracks such as "Ay Ay Ay," "La Sospecha," and "Por Haberme Alejado," solidifying their status in the salsa world. By 2006, they released Cambiando la Historia, continuing their success with songs like "Llorando," which blended salsa with Pacific rhythms. Over eight years, Son de Cali became a staple in major Latin festivals across the Americas, sharing stages with icons like Gilberto Santa Rosa and Oscar D’León. After their split in 2010, both García and Vásquez pursued successful solo careers, but Son de Cali remains a defining name in Colombian salsa.
