Sonata Arctica is a power metal band from Finland. Formed in 1995 under the original name "Tricky Beans," the group weathered a number of changes to both its name and its roster, eventually settling on a lineup featuring singer Tony Kakko, guitarist Elias Viljanen, keyboard player Henrik Klingenberg, bassist Pasi Kaupinnen and Tommy Portimo on drums. The musicians made their recording debut with the gold-certified 'Eclipica' in 1999, followed by 'Successor' (2000), 'Silence' (2001), 'Takatalvi' (2004) and 'Last Drop Falls' (2006). Their 2007 release, 'Unia', topped the charts in Finland while also reaching number 37 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart. Sonata Arctica's commercial success continued with albums like 2012's Stones Grow Her Name and 2014's Pariah's Child, both of which also climbed to Number 1 on the Official Finnish Charts. 2016's The Ninth Hour and 2019's Talviyö both reached number 2 in the band's homeland, and Sonata Arctica remained a Top 10 act with Clear Cold Beyond, which debuted at number 7 in Finland in March 2024. The album was globally popular, too, hitting number 60 in Japan and number 12 in Switzerland.
