In recent years there has been a surge of interest throughout Latin America in traditional music played with a modern twist. Known as 'New Cumbia' or, in the case of the band Sonora 5 Estrellas, 'New Chilean Cumbia', the music encompasses many musical influences and draws upon a wide range of traditional styles including ska, reggae, salsa and other genres. The Sonora 5 Estrellas are in the vanguard of the Cumbia movement within their native Chile and since forming in 2009 have been entertaining audiences with their unique brand of music. The band's career started out slowly until the addition of a brass section with Emilio Melo and Francisco Quilaqueo on the trumpet and Emanuel Valencia playing trombone. The new, larger band soon found favour amongst Chilean music fans and in 2011 with the release of their first video 'Fair Love', their reputation began to spread. The band is a constantly evolving project and their sound continues to develop and improve. Having established themselves throughout Latin America, the Sonora 5 Estrellas are now beginning to find new audiences from around the globe.
