Formed in the early 1990s, the Soul Rebels Brass Band – also referred to as the Soul Rebels, the Rebels, and Soul Rebel – is an eight-piece New Orleans, Louisiana-based brass band that reframes modern musical styles – R&B, rap, funk, hip-hop, soul, jazz, and pop – within a classic brass band context. The band’s releases have been embraced by critics and audiences alike, but they are best known for their eclectic and electric live performances. Founded by percussionists Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, who met while members of Harold Dejan’s Young Olympia Brass Band, the band’s line-up has changed throughout the years as their music has evolved. Initially a local New Orleans secret, they quickly caught the attention of the music industry and eventually undertook international tours, performing in Europe, Australia, Japan, China, and South Korea. The Soul Rebels Brans Band have performed or collaborated with a variety of artists including Katy Perry, Nas, Rakim, Green Day, Macy Gray, Robert Glasper, Talib Kweli, GZA, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Mobb Deep, Raekwon, Metallica, Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Allen Toussaint, George Clinton, Snoop Dogg, Jack White, and many others. Their critically acclaimed catalog features albums such as Let Your Mind Be Free (1994), Rebelution (2004), Unlock Your Mind (2011), Power = Power Mixtape (2013), and Poetry in Motion (2019).
