Born in Geneva, Switzerland in November, 1971, Stephan MacLeod is a classical bass-baritone singer and conductor. He is also the founder and artistic director of Gli Angeli Genève, a special ensemble that focuses on repertoires from the 17th to 19th century and plays on period instruments. MacLeod conducts between 40 and 50 performances per year while also maintaining his singing career. Initially, MacLeod spent 10 years at the Concervatoire de Musique de Geneve studying violin and piano. He then began singing lessons and at the age of 19, he was accepted into German soprano Ursula Buckel’s class in Geneva. He was also offered a position at the Cologne Musikhochschule. In 1991, MacLeod won various competition prizes in his desire to receive scholarships. He was then invited to perform recitals in Cologne, Stuttgart, Bonn, Venice, Paris, and the United States. MacLeod’s repertoire focuses on Renaissance and western European baroque music. He is particularly active in the oratorio repertoire. He began releasing albums in 1998, both as a solo vocalist and his ensemble Gli Angeli Genève, which he founded in 2003. Their 2008 album German Baroque Cantatas, Vol. 1 was a critical success and was quickly followed by German Baroque Cantatas, Vol. 2 in 2009. MacLeod has released more than 90 albums on various labels including Naxos, Harmonia Mundi Deutschland, Sony Classics, and Marco Polo amongst others. Since 2013, he has taught singing at the Haute de Musique de Musique de Lausanne in Switzerland. In 2019, he led the Gli Angeli Geneva in The Passion According to Saint-Matthieu, for the Claves label.
