Steve Tyrell

Making his name in the 1960s as an A&R man, producer and songwriter, Steve Tyrell worked with Linda Ronstadt, Dionne Warwick and B.J. Thomas before taking to the mic himself to become a suave, romantic crooner and renowned performer of the 'Great American Songbook'. Growing up in his father's grocery store in Houston, Texas, Tyrell sang in high school bands and had local hits in his teens before heading to New York at the age of 18, working as a staff producer and promotions man for Scepter Records. He went on to oversee soundtracks for movies such as 'Alfie' and 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', working with legendary songwriters Hal David and Burt Bacharach on their classic hits such as 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head' and 'Look of Love'. Although he established himself as a producer by working with Ray Charles and Diana Ross it was his association with Hollywood that led to him singing a track for the film 'Mystic Pizza' and he then went on to perform the great standard 'The Way You Look Tonight' for the soundtrack to 'Father of the Bride' in 1991. It proved to be a huge break for Tyrell and he went on to release his debut album 'A New Standard' in 1999, on which he gave smooth, elegant performances of vintage jazz-pop songs such as 'On the Sunny Side of the Street' and 'Cheek to Cheek'. He also recorded songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, Bacharach and Broadway lyricist Sammy Cahn, and explored the idea of re-interpreting great R&B songs with the backing of orchestras on the 2015 album 'That Lovin' Feeling', which featured guest appearances from Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann and B.J. Thomas. Still inspired by the classic American songs from 1920-1960, he went on to host a radio show on Los Angeles station KKJZ, and in 2017 he released a charity record 'Hand in Hand for Houston' in aid of the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
