Stick in the Wheel are a bold and dynamic British folk band known for their electrifying take on traditional music. Formed in East London in 2012, the group have been at the forefront of the modern folk revival, blending classic folk roots with a raw, energetic approach that challenges conventions and pushes boundaries. The band was founded by Nicola Kearey (vocals) and Ian Carter (guitar/producer), who were driven by a shared desire to reinterpret traditional folk songs in a contemporary context. Stick in the Wheel’s lineup has varied over the years, but its core members remain committed to staying true to folk traditions while incorporating elements of punk, rock, and post-punk, making their music both timeless and fresh. Their approach to folk music is often described as 'unpolished' and 'raw,' bringing an intensity to the genre. Their debut album, From Here (2015), received critical acclaim for its powerful interpretation of classic folk songs and Nicola Kearey’s captivating vocals. Their next album, Follow Them True (2018), further solidified their place in the British folk scene, with a focus on politically charged themes and a mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation heralding the emergence of their future folktronica sound. This electronic edge was more prevalent on their 2021 LP Tonebeds for Poetry, which featured drums and percussion from Sian Monaghan and bass from George Hoyle. In 2024, the band released a new album, A Thousand Pokes.
