Hailing from Potsdam, Germany, Subway to Sally combines the crushing, guitar-driven aggression of heavy metal with the instrumentation of medieval folk music. This unique mixture has made the band a pioneering name in the "medieval metal" genre, along with such similarly-styled bands as Schandmaul and In Extremo. Formed in 1990, the group made its studio debut with Album 1994, a Celtic-inspired folk-rock album that was released in 1994. Album 1994's songs were largely performed in English, whereas the band's follow-up — 1995's MCMXCV — found Subway to Sally focusing on German lyrics instead. After releasing 1996's Foppt den Dämon! and 1997's Bannkreis, the band enjoyed Top 40 success for the first time with 1999's Hochzeit, which reached Number 29 on the German Albums chart. From Hochzeit onward, Subway to Sally remained a Top 40 act in Germany, hitting Number 15 with 2001's Herzblut before reaching the Top 10 with 2003's Engelskrieger. For 2005's Nord Nord Ost, the band collaborated with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg, resulting in a symphonic sound that pushed the album to Number 5 in Germany. 2009's Kreuzfeuer, 2014's Mitgift, 2019's Hey!, and 2023's Himmelfahrt all reached Number 5, as well, confirming Subway to Sally's status not only as medieval metal icons, but mainstream stars, as well.
