Powell Aguirre (born on April 10, 2000, in Sammamish, Washington, U.S.) – known professionally as Surf Mesa – oozes laidback cool, and as the son of jazz saxophonist Tony Aguirre has music coursing through his veins. The Seattle-raised artist has been lighting up the electronic scene since 2019, finding himself at the center of a TikTok storm when his chilled-out gem, "ILY (I Love You Baby)" featuring Emilee – which sampled Frankie Valli's 1967 favorite "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" – gained attention on the video-sharing platform. By June 2020, the track had made it into the Top 10 in various countries worldwide, including Germany and Malaysia, and reached Top 5 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Having taken his first steps as a producer at high school, Surf Mesa began life on SoundCloud before diving in at the musical deep end after relocating to Los Angeles. In 2019, he unleashed his debut single, "Taken Away" featuring Alexa Danielle, and his debut Bedroom EP followed. The EP was made during a housebound period after he broke his leg and showcased four tracks of low-key, hazy electronica. The following year, Surf Mesa amped up his sound for a more upbeat, synth-pop-friendly single with bedroom popstar Gus Dapperton, "Somewhere." That same year, he dropped an official remix for "Be Kind" from US big-hitter Marshmello and popstar Halsey. In 2021, proving his knack for versatility, Surf Mesa joined forces with US singer and songwriter Madison Beer for the sweet pop jam "Carried Away."
