SWV

A sassy, urban girl group that stormed the US charts in the early 1990s, SWV (Sisters With Voices) swaggered with the cool of the New Jack Swing scene and helped pave the way for the likes of Destiny's Child. Formed by three Brooklyn friends Coko Clemons, Taj Johnson-George and Lelee Lyons, the girls grew up singing in church choirs before sending out demo tracks to every label they could think of and being signed up by RCA to an eight album deal. Under the guidance of producer Teddy Riley, album It's About Time (1992) went on to sell over three million copies, producing the Top 10 singles I'm So Into You and Right Here/Human Nature as well as the US Number 1, Weak. Their soulful harmonising and combination of R&B and hip hop, led to hit albums New Beginning (1996) and Release Some Tension and successful singles Anything, You're The One and Use Your Heart, but the group split in 1998 with Coko pursuing a solo career. Reforming in 2005, they went on to tour with Bobby Brown and Blackstreet and released comeback album I Missed Us (2012), but they will be remembered alongside En Vogue and TLC as one of the great female pop groups of the early 1990s.
