Tahiti 80, a French indie pop band formed in 1992 in Rouen, was established by Xavier Boyer, Pedro Resende, Médéric Gontier, and Sylvain Marchand. The band emerged from a university project at the University of Rouen, initially comprising just Boyer and Resende. They named themselves after a vintage t-shirt from 1980. Their early work culminated in a self-produced EP titled 20 Minutes (1996), leading to their signing with French label Atmospheriques. The band traveled to New York City in 1998 to record their debut album Puzzle with producer Andy Chase, featuring collaborations with notable artists like Eric Matthews and Adam Schlesinger. The album achieved gold certification in Japan by 2000. Following Puzzle, they reunited with Chase for their 2002 album Wallpaper for the Soul, experimenting with more eclectic sounds across various international recording locations. Their subsequent albums continued to reflect their evolving style, with Activity Center in 2008 marking a return to a rawer, rock-focused sound. In 2011, they released The Past, The Present & The Possible, followed by Ballroom in 2014, showcasing further stylistic development and co-production by Richard Swift. The band's single, "Hello Hello"(2024) adds to their extensive discography, continuing to showcase their distinct blend of indie pop influences with a touch of modern experimentation.
