Tanya Blount

Tanya Trotter (née Blount) is an accomplished American singer, songwriter, and actor known for her powerful voice and dynamic performances. Born on 25 September 1973, in Washington, D.C., her passion for music was evident from a young age, leading her to perform in various local talent shows and church choirs. Her career took off in 1993 with a breakout appearance in the hit movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993), where her duet performance of "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" with Lauryn Hill became an iconic moment in film and music history. This role not only highlighted her acting talent but also solidified her place in popular culture. She released her debut album Natural Thing the following year, which showcased her impressive vocal range and garnered critical acclaim. The single "Through the Rain" became a hit, establishing her as a rising star in the R&B and gospel music scenes. Her unique blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics resonated with audiences, earning her a devoted fanbase. She signed to Sean Combs's Bad Boy Entertainment in 1996 and appeared on the label's first gospel LP. After taking an extended break from releasing music, she returned in 2016 to release the duet album Love Affair with her husband, Michael Trotter Jr., as Trotter and Blount. The duo also marked the debut of their new Americana and Southern soul project The War and Treaty, releasing the single "Hi Ho" that year and debut album Healing Tide in 2018. She continues to release music with the War and Treaty, most recently putting out Lover's Game in 2023. In 2023, they became the first Black duo to be nominated for the Country Music Association Award for Duo of the Year.
