Taking inspiration from the catchy, euphoric club hits that crossed over into the pop charts in the 1990s, Tensnake is the German DJ not afraid to be derided as cheesy or populist as he seeks to bring dance music back into the mainstream. Marco Niemerski originally played in punk rock cover bands at school, but fell in love with acid house and electro after visiting a gay club in his hometown of Hamburg in his teens. He created his own versions of UK garage and funky house tunes in his bedroom, but it wasn't until the mid-2000s that he really found his groove and was swept along by the nu-disco craze for vintage synths and pop hooks. His remixes for Junior Boys, Sally Shapiro and Aloe Blacc got him noticed but it was his huge dancefloor anthem Coma Cat that cemented his reputation as one of the hottest producers around. Full of throbbing, upbeat house tunes, his debut album Glow (2014) featured collaborations with Nile Rodgers, MNEK, Jamie Liddell and Stuart Price and was recognised alongside the likes of Daft Punk, LCD Soundsytem and Todd Terje as part of a new era of electronic pop music.
