Initially in the imposing shadow of Cesaria Evora, for whom he began composing on Miss Perfumado, Teofilo Chantre emancipated himself to steal his own inspiration. He made his debut in 1993 with Terra & Cretcheu, and revealed himself as an artist with a personality all his own. Teofilo Chantre likes to go beyond the mornas and coladeiras of Cape Verde to embrace Brazilian music. Having lived in France since childhood, Teofilo Chantre has spent most of his career there. Di Alma (1997), Rodatempo (2000), Live (2002), Azulando (2004), Viaja (2007) constitute a smooth career path. For MeStissage in 2011, Teofilo Chantre chose to sing in both French and Portuguese.
