Classical duo Sarah Ayoub (cello) and Laura Ayoub (violin) began performing together as The Ayoub Sisters in 2015. The Egyptian sisters were born three years apart in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in Milngavie. They grew up immersed in classical music and would attend performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) with their parents. They both studied music at Douglas Academy before completing their studies at separate schools: Sarah attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (2010-2014) and Laura studied at the Royal College of Music (2013-2017). The duo came together and would perform unique classical music versions of modern pop tunes and post them to social media. Their 2015 version of “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars was discovered by Ronson, who invited the duo to record the song and perform at the BRIT Awards. This led to their debut performance at the Royal Albert Hall and a recording contract with the Decca Records label. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the Royal Philharmonic, their debut album, The Ayoub Sisters, was released in 2017 and reached Number 1 on the Official Classical Albums chart. The album included classical favorites as well as more unique takes on current pop hits. The Ayoub Sisters was a critical and commercial success, leading to several high-profile live performances and television appearances. Sarah and Laura Ayoub were honored with the Arab Woman of the Year Award as well as being recipients of the World Youth Forum Award. The Ayoub Sisters released their sophomore album, Arabesque, in 2022.
