Formed in 1978 in Manchester, The Durutti Column is first and foremost the band of Vini Reilly, a guitarist with a passion for jazz who was drawn to punk. Signed to Factory Records, they developed a cutting-edge aesthetic oriented towards experimental rock and electronica. His first albums, The Return of the Durutti Column (1980), Another Setting (1982) and Without Mercy (1984), remain benchmarks for a music based on atmosphere and improvisation. In 1989, Vini Reilly opened up to samples in an album of the same name, then moved into other worlds such as electro(Sex and Death, 1995) and theater music, culminating in a tribute to historic manager Tony Wilson in Paean to Wilson in 2009.
