The Gazette

The Gazette formed in 2002 in Kanagawa, Japan. Vocalist Ruki, lead guitarist Uruha, rhythm guitarist Avi, bassist Reita, and original drummer Yune combined the glam aesthetics of the visual kei moment with an aggressive mix of hard rock and alt-metal. By 2003, Kai had taken Yune's place as the band's drummer, and The Gazette made its official debut that spring with the four-song EP Cockayne Soup. A full-length album, Disorder, followed in 2004. Disorder reached Number 19 in Japan, and the single "Reila" became the band's first Top 10 hit one year later. "Reila" marked the first of many hits songs for The Gazette, who followed the single's release with singles like "Filth in the Beauty" (a Number 5 hit in 2006), "Hyena" (a Number 4 hit in 2007), "Leech" (a Number 2 hit in 2008), and "Before I Decay" (a Number 2 hit in 2009). The band's albums were equally successful, with 2006's Nil, 2007's Stacked Rubbish, and 2009's Dim all charting within the Top 5 of the Oricon Albums chart. The Gazette maintained its success during the 2010s, too, reaching Number 4 with 2012's Division, Number 8 with 2013's Beautiful Deformity, and Number 3 with 2015's Dogma. The band's first Number 1 album arrived in 2018, when the compilation album Traces Vol. 2 topped the Taiwanese charts. Several years later, The Gazette launched a new decade with 2021's Mass, which charted at Number 4 in Japan, and returned the following year with another compilation album entitled 20TH ANNIVERSARY BEST ALBUM HETERODOXY-DIVIDED 3 CONCEPTS-.
