The Jesus Lizard is one of the leading alternative noise rock bands of the 1990s. The Austin, Texas-based band, formed in 1987 around singer David Yow, also includes Duane Denison (guitar), David Wm. Sims (bass) and Mac McNeilly (drums). Although they didn't belong to the grunge family, their noisy, creative rock earned them critical acclaim, while audiences delighted in their frontman's chaotic performances. Pure (1989), the band's first EP relocated to Chicago, was produced by Steve Albini, as were all the records released on the independent Touch & Go label. However, the band's style remained faithful to Big Black-style hardcore. Known for four-letter album titles like Goat (1991) and Liar (1992), The Jesus Lizard proved to be one of the most influential bands of their time and style. In 1993, the band signed with Warner Bros.-affiliated Giant Records and recorded the album Down (1994), then moved to major label Capitol for the follow-up Shot (1996) and Blue (1998), before splitting up in 1999. After a ten-year hiatus, The Jesus Lizard reformed in their original configuration for a few concerts in 2009. Two more concerts followed in 2017 and 2019, but no new album was released. We had to wait until 2024 to see the release of a new album with Rack, released twenty-six years after its predecessor.
