The Newton Brothers

Film composers Andy Grush and Taylor Newton Stewart form The Newton Brothers, an American duo best known for its work in the thriller and horror movie genres. Grush and Stewart began working together in 2007, forming a partnership not only as songwriters, but also as multi-instrumentalists who were capable of performing the cinematic music they composed. They made their debut with 2011's Detachment, a moderately successful drama starring Adrien Brody. The following two years found The Newton Brothers working on films like the 2013 comedy Pawn Shop Chronicles and the 2014 action movie Catch Hell. With 2014's Oculus, The Newton Brothers began working in the horror genre, a format that would serve the composers well throughout the remainder of the decade. A success at the box office, the movie also marked Grush and Stewart's first time working with filmmaker Mike Flanagan, with whom they would repeatedly partner during the following years. After contributing music to three Flanagan productions — Before I Wake, Hush, and Ouija: Origin of Evil, the latter of which received a nomination for "Best Soundtrack/Score " from the BloodGuts UK Horror Awards — in 2016, the pair teamed up with Flanagan on the wildly successful TV series The Haunting of Hill House, which was released to critical raves in 2018. A sequel, The Haunting of Bly Manor followed in 2020. Meanwhile, The Newton Brothers continued to work with other directors, as well, writing the scores to 2019's Doctor Sleep, 2020's The Grudge, 2021's The Forever Purge.
