The Sxplay

Born Sayuri Sugawara on 29 June 1990 in Tokyo, the Japanese singer known as the Sxplay kicked off her career in 2009 and is famous for putting her voice to "Kimi ga Iru Kara," the theme song for the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIII, among numerous other videogame soundtracks. After winning over audiences at the 7 Days Audition and the 30 Days Audition in 2008, she scored a contract with For Life Music Entertainment and got the ball rolling immediately. Harriveder debut single, "Ano Hi no Yakusoku" arriving in September 2009, followed by a career-boosting vocal placement on the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack, which was composed by Masashi Hamauzu. She struck gold with her debut album First Story (2010), anchored by the track "Kimi ga Iru Kara," and rising to number 14 on Japan's Oricon chart. The LP's third single "Sunao ni Narenakute" also found fame as the theme song for the Japanese television drama of the same name, with fourth single "Suki to Iu Kotoba" soundtracking the theme song to the 2010 version of the drama Kasoken no Onna. Her second album emerged shortly after her first, Open the Gate, which landed in November 2010. Four years later she parted ways with For Life Music Entertainment to forge her own path as an indie artist. She inaugurated her new stage name the Sxplay with her first independently released EP Call to Action in May 2014 and released its follow-up, Butterfly Effect, in 2015, propelled by the track "Mikansei-Canvas," which was picked as the theme song for the 2016-17 edition of the Paralym Art World Cup. Her third full-length album Memento was unveiled in 2018 followed by 2019 single "Hyouryuu" (漂流, "Drifting") and 2020's "Kimito Kono Sorano Shitade." "Flower Rain" and "Lycoris" emerged in 2022.
