Thomas Bangalter

Singer, songwriter, musician, and producer Thomas Bangalter – born January 3, 1975, in Paris, France – is best known as one half of electronic duo Daft Punk from their inception in 1993 until their split in 2021. The son of songwriter / producer Daniel Vangarde and choreographer Thérèse Thoreux, Thomas Bangalter began studying the piano when he was six years old. While attending the Lycée Carnot school, he met Guy-Manuel d Homem-Christo and future Phoenix member Laurent Brancowitz and formed indie rock trio Darlin’. A review of the band referred to their sound as ‘daft punky thrash’, which inspired the name of his and Homem-Christo’s next group. The newly renamed Daft Punk decided to pursue an electronic music direction which led to the departure of Brancowitz. After the release of their debut single, “The New Wave,” Daft Punk’s career began picking up steam with the release of albums such as Homework (1997), Discovery (2001), Human After All (2005) and Random Access Memories (2013). Thomas Bangalter founded the Roulé label in 1995, which released records by several different artists including solo releases from Thomas Bangalter himself. He became involved in several musical side-projects including Stardust, who scored a massive club hit with their 1998 single “Music Sounds Better With You.” In 2000, he collaborated with DJ Falcon in a new musical project called Together. Thomas Bangalter then composed the soundtrack to Gasper Noé's film Irréversible (2002) as well as providing music for the Enter the Void (2009), Climax (2018) and En Corps (2022). He liquidated his Roulé label in 2018, which was followed by the break-up of Daft Punk in 2021. He then composed the classical score to French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj’s ballet entitled Mythologies. The soundtrack was released in April 2023 and rose to Number 1 on the French Classical Music Albums chart and Number 5 in the UK.
