Latin R&B / funk / soul group Tierra was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1972. The group was founded by Rudy Salas and his younger brother Steve Salas, both former members of Latino rock band El Chicano. After the release of their first two albums – Tierra (1973) and Stranded (1980) - Tierra found commercial success with their 1980 album City Nights. This third album included the hit single "Together” - a remake of The Intruders' 1967 classic - which reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the R&B chart. The band continued to showcase their unique Latin sound on albums such as Together Again (1981) and Bad City Boys (1983). The group disappeared for the remainder of the 1980s, resurfacing in 1993 with the album Tonight. Internal conflicts between the brothers led to Steve Salas leaving Tierra and forming his own group. At one point, there were two different versions of Tierra, each led by one of the Salas brothers. While legal issues were being worked on behind the scenes, Rudy’s version of Tierra – which also featured his son David – recorded several more albums including Two Worlds – Dos Mundos (2001), Welcome to Café East L.A. (2005), On the Right Track (2008), On Solid Ground (2013), Ya Llego (2017), and Keep It Going (2021). Rudy Salas died on December 29, 2020, at the age of 72. Steve Salas died on February 10, 2022, at the age of 70. After the deaths of its two founding members, Rudy’s son David kept the band’s music alive by forming Tierra Legacy, which continues to perform the timeless music of the original group.
