Musician, comedian, actor, and writer Tim Minchin was born to Australian parents on October 7, 1975, in Northampton, England. Known for his scraggy red hair, eye make-up and bare feet, he looks like a failed 1970s glam-rock star, and he plays satirical songs that whimsically ramble on about all manner of surreal topics. While born in England, when he was young, his parents relocated back to Australia, where he grew up in Perth. Interested in music at a young age, he began studying piano at the age of 8, but tiring of the discipline required in learning piano, he gave up at the age of 11. He studied English and theater at the University of Western Australia (UWA) from which he graduated in 1996. Two years later, he earned an Advanced Diploma in contemporary music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He began to compose music for documentaries and plays and then devoted some time to his career as an actor. As a songwriter, he began to write both serious pop music and satirical songs. In 2000, he wrote and starred in Pop, a musical performed at the Room Theatre in Perth. His first album, Sit, which he recorded with his band Timmy the Dog, was released in 2001. He came to prominence in 2005 with his hit show Darkside at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2005. The Darkside album was issued that same year and was followed by 2006’s So Rock. Tim Minchin’s cabaret show won him the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005 and he went on to build a huge following in the UK. His next album, Ready for This?, was released in 2009, while Live at the O2 followed a year later. Further albums include Tim Minchin and the Heritage Orchestra (2011), and So Fucking Rock (2013). In 2016, the single "Come Home (Cardinal Pell)" rose to #16 in the Australian charts. He was also achieving success in his acting career which included the cable TV series Californication (2013), plus work in films and stage productions. In 2020, he released Apart Together, his first pop solo album, which reached Number 3 on the Australian Albums chart. The single “Carry You”, which was featured in his TV series Upright, reached Number 42 on the ARIA Singles chart.
