Totó la Momposina (b. 1948) is one of the great names in South American music. The Colombian singer defends the traditional rhythms of her country, a blend of indigenous music and African and Hispanic contributions. Cumbia, sexteto, gaita, porro or mapale find in her a voice and energy that symbolize them perfectly. Since the Cantadora album recorded in France in 1983, Totó la Momposina has become a recognized figure on the world music scene. In 1993, La Candela Viva was released on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. Pacanto (2000), Gaita y Tambores (2002) and La Bodega (2009) are further examples of the authenticity of an internationally acclaimed artist. Totó la Momposina's modern rhythms have inspired DJs and remixers such as Paul Kalkbrenner, Manu Chao and Timbaland. The singer herself succumbs to the fashion, revisiting La Candela Viva on her 2015 album Tambolero .
