Alternative rock band Underground Lovers was formed in 1988 in Melbourne, Australia. Founded by guitarist / vocalist Glenn Bennie and guitarist / keyboardist / vocalist Vincent Giarrusso, the band was originally known as GBVG before changing their name in 1990 to Underground Lovers. Initially exploring a darker gothic post-punk sound, the band expanded their musical scope with the addition of Richard Andrew (drums), Philippa Nihill (vocals / guitars / keyboards), and Marice Argiro (bass). The group self-financed their 1990 self-titled debut album, which received national distribution the following year. The album was a critical success and earned the group the Best New Talent honor at the 1992 ARIA Music Awards. Their second album, Leaves Me Blind (1992), reached number 133 on the ARIA Albums chart, and was followed by their most successful album Dream It Down (1994), which reached number 55. Underground Lovers continued to gain critical praise and grow their fanbase with albums such as Rushall Station (1996), Ways T’Burn (1997) and Cold Feeling (1999). By the release of 2001’s Mallboy, the group’s line-up had splintered, and they broke up the following year. However, the original line-up reunited for a series of shows in 2009 and 2010 and decided to make their reformation permanent with the release of the album Weekend (2013). They followed that album with Staring at You Staring at Me (2017) and A Left Turn (2019). On October 30, 2024, drummer Richard Andrew died of lung cancer at the age of 58.
