Influenced by America's Arrested Development and Guru's Jazzmatazz project, the British band Urban Species is part of the acid jazz movement of the 1990s. Mixing hip-hop, funk, jazz, reggae, funk and soul in their big shaker, Urban Species scored their first hit in 1993 with "Spiritual Love ". The 1994 album Listen was well received in the UK and France. The departure of DJ Renegade left rapper Peter Akinrinola, aka Mintos, at the group's helm. Urban Species' decline coincided with that of the acid jazz movement, and Blanket was a failure in 1998. Peter Akinrinola announced the re-formation of Urban Species in 2008, but this did not materialize.
