Canadian indie pop act Valley was formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 2014 after two bands double-booked the same recording studio. Consisting of singer Rob Laska, guitarist Michael "Mickey" Brandolino, bassist Alex Dimauro, and drummer Karah James, the group released its debut EP Car Test in 2015, followed by a second extended play titled This Room Is White a year later. After signing with Universal Music Canada in 2017, Valley began teasing their first studio album through the release of the EPs Maybe: Side A (2018) and Maybe: Side B (2019). Preceded by the single "There's Still a Light in the House," Maybe the full-length album was released in 2020 to great critical acclaim, earning the band a nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the Juno Awards. The four-piece continued their ascent to indie stardom with the EPs sucks to see you doing better (2020), Last Birthday (2021), and The After Party (2022) while also receiving a nomination for the SOCAN Songwriting Prize for their 2021 single "Homebody." Released in early 2023, their song "Throwback Tears," the first single from their sophomore effort Lost in Translation, broadened the group's international appeal, reaching number 83 on Japan's Tokyo Hot 100 chart. The track was included in Valley's third full-length album Lost in Translation, which arrived in June 2023 via Universal Music Canada. The following year, the band delivered a fourth LP titled Water the Flowers, Pray for a Garden, with the title track and "When You Know Someone" released as its first promotional singles.
