Vladimir Cosma is a Franco-Romanian composer, violinist and conductor, born on April 13, 1940 in Bucharest. He became famous as a composer for many French films, particularly popular in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Vladimir Cosma is the author of memorable themes for films such as Le Grand Blond avec une Chaussure Noire (1972), Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob (1973), L'Aile ou la Cuisse (1976), La Chèvre (1981) and L'As des As (1982). Vladimir Cosma was born into a musical family in Bucharest, his father a pianist and conductor, his mother a musician and champion swimmer, and his uncle, Edgar Cosma, a renowned composer. From an early age, Vladimir Cosma studied violin and composition at Bucharest's National Music University. By the age of eight, he was already giving concerts with his father. After winning first prizes in violin and composition, the young musician moved to Paris in 1963 to continue his studies at the Conservatoire National de Paris. He began performing internationally as a concert violinist in 1964, and gradually turned to composition. In 1968, Vladimir Cosma composed his first film score for Yves Robert's Alexandre le Bienheureux , a turning point that marked the start of a prolific career. Over the years, he composed music for over three hundred films and TV series, collaborating with such renowned directors as Gérard Oury, Francis Veber, Claude Zidi, Claude Pinoteau and Jean-Jacques Beineix. He was responsible for the soundtracks of many hit films, including La Boum in 1980, Diva in 1981 and Le Bal in 1983 (the latter two each won him a César for best original score). Vladimir Cosma also made his mark on major French and American television productions, with works such as Michel Strogoff (1975) and Châteauvallon (1984). Vladimir Cosma has ventured into a variety of musical genres, including jazz, collaborating with such renowned artists as Chet Baker and Stéphane Grappelli, and chanson, writing for such voices as Nana Mouskouri and Mireille Mathieu. In 2006, he conducted the world premiere of Eh bien! dansez maintenant, inspired by La Fontaine's Fables, with the Orchestre de la Suisse romande. In 2007, his opera Marius et Fanny, based on Marcel Pagnol's trilogy, premiered at the Opéra de Marseille. At the end of 2022, he published his memoirs Du rêve à Reality.
