Multi-instrumentalist and composer Warren Ellis is one of Nick Cave's privileged collaborators. A fellow Australian, Warren Ellis has been a member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds since 1994. The two men have worked together on the film and theater soundtrack front since Woyzeck and The Proposition in 2005. In the same year, they joined forces again on The Bad Seeds' second project, Grinderman. In 2009, their creative duo once again worked together on the soundtrack for the film The Road, adapted from the short story by Cormac McCarthy. Lawless in 2012 was written for the cinema by Nick Cave. The two men composed and orchestrated the film's soundtrack, which included several previously unreleased tracks sung by Mark Lanegan and Emmylou Harris.
