Born in Dakar, Senegal in 1950, Wasis Diop is a guitarist who holds a special place in the history of African music. His blending of Senegalese folk and modern pop and jazz reached international audiences and has inspired generations of musicians to follow in his wake. In the 1970s, he left Senegal and traveled to Paris, France to study engineering. However, he shifted his focus to music and formed the West African Cosmos with fellow Senegalese musician Umbañ U Kset. However, Wasis Diop left the group in 1979 to pursue a solo career. He didn’t achieve great international success until the release of Hyènes (1992), which was the soundtrack to the film directed by his brother Djibril Diop Mambéty. Further critically acclaimed albums include No Sant (1996), Toxu (1998), African Voice with Olivier Delevingne (2002), Judu Bek / Automobile Mobile (2008), and Sequences (2014). Wasis Diop also released the compilation album Everything is Never Quite Enough in 2003.
