German goth heroes Xmal Deutschland formed in Hamburg in 1980. Initially an all-female band, they were particularly successful internationally and took their sound from dark wave and post-punk. The group initially consisted of Anja Huwe (vocals), Manuela Rickers (guitar), Fiona Sangster (keyboards), Rita Simonsen (bass) and Caro May (drums). Their debut single "Großstadtindianer" was released in 1981 and they landed an underground hit with the song " Incubus Succubus" in 1982. One year later, their debut album Fetisch was released. Although Xmal Deutschland delivered their lyrics in German, they regularly reached the UK independent charts. They toured Europe and even performed in the US. 1984 saw the release of the album Tocsin and Viva followed three years later, with several line-up changes coming after: Wolfgang Ellerbrock on bass, Frank Z. on guitar and Curt Cress on drums, among others. In 1989, Xmal Deutschland unveiled the album Devils, their final release, which was followed by a tour. In 2024, the compilation Early Singles 1981-1982 saw the light, which featured some of the band's early releases.
