Hailing from Bad Homburg, Germany, York are an electronic duo formed in 1997 by brothers Torsten and Jörg Stenzel. York’s approach to downtempo, chillout, ambient, house, and trance has enabled them to create unique audio atmospheres grounded in dance music and laced with melodic guitar hooks. Torsten Stenzel began studying piano at the age of five. Initially interested in classical music, he changed course in the early 1990s when he discovered techno and house music. Jörg Stenzel was exploring stringed instruments at the age of 11 with a focus on the guitar. The duo combined their talents and released their first single, “The Awakening”, in 1998. The single reached Number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. Their next charting single, “On the Beach”, sampled Chris Rea’s song of the same name. It became an even bigger hit, reaching Number 4 in 2000. The single “Farewell to the Moon” climbed to Number 37 later that year. Their first single of 2001, “The Fields of Love” (featuring ATB), was released in January and reached Number 16. York’s debut album, Experience, was released in March, 2001. Their second album, Peace (2004), featured the club hits “Iceflowers” and “I Need You”. The duo released the single “Mercury Rising” in 2006 before taking a four year break. They returned in 2010 with the single “Moonrise on the Beach” (featuring DreamMan), followed by 2011 single and then the album Islanders (2012). The album featured collaborations with Mike Oldfield, Jennifer Paige, and The Thrillseekers. In 2013, they collaborated with Mike Oldfield again to create the album Tubular Beats, which used original tapes from Mike Oldfield’s vaults and created modern updates of his classics. The duo released a series of singles leading up to their 2016 album Traveler. York released four singles in 2020: “Fiction Ain’t a Friend” (with Made On Jupiter), “We Are Young” (with Sin Plomo featuring Janet Taylor), “Cala D’Hort” (with Es Vedra) and “Bella”. In 2024, York teamed up with Culture Clan for the jazz-infused album Lyrical Attack.
