Young & Company

The roots of funk group Young & Company reach all the way back to 1970 when the Young family moved from West Virginia to East Orange, New Jersey. Brothers Billy, Mike, and Kenneth Young recruited former Aurra member Buddy ‘Hank’ Hankerson and drummer Dave Reyes and formed the Young Movement. In 1974, they changed their name to Flashflood and worked with established bands like Slave and Aurra. The group brought in vocalist Jackie Thomas and changed their name to Young & Company. After recording demos, they were signed by Brunswick Records and released their debut single, “Strut Your Stuff (Sexy Lady)” in 1980. Their second single, “I Like What You’re Doing To Me”, was a massive regional hit. Young & Company’s debut album I Like What You’re Doing to Me was also released in 1980, although it was not a commercial success. The group left Brunswick and released a few independent singles in 1981 and 1985 before splitting up.
