Over time, the face of Zap Mama has become more and more like that of Marie Daulne, its founder. The group is a way for Marie Daulne to express her cultural mix, between Africa and Europe. Born in Zaire and raised in Belgium, Marie Daulne formed Zap Mama in 1989. Zap Mama, released in 1991, was an unexpected success for an entirely a capela album. The album was subsequently released as Adventures in Afropea 1 (1993) for the American market. Sabsylma (1994) continues in the same vein, while instrumentals appear on Seven (1997) and A Ma Zone (1999). With Ancestry in Progress (2004) and Supermoon (2007), Zap Mama opens up to urban rap and R&B cultures. ReCreation in 2010 sees Zap Mama collaborate with G. Love, Vincent Cassel, Bilal and Tony Allen.
